How to apply a template when enabling a module

Enable a module and choose a starter template to seed it with pre-built content — boards, roles, pipelines, or other scaffolding — so your team can start using the module without building from scratch.

Open in SPLX OS

Templates give you a working starting point the first time you turn on a module. When Bayou & Co. switched on the People module, their admin Diego applied the "Med Spa Team Structure" template and had three departments and four seat definitions waiting on the org chart in under 5 minutes — instead of spending a session building them by hand.

Enabling a module and applying a template are two quick steps: the module switch turns the module on, and the module's Templates page seeds it with content.

Before you start

  • Turning a module on needs the module.toggle permission (owner and admin by default). Applying a template needs the module's template.apply permission, for example people.template.apply — owner, admin, and advisor by default.
  • Templates are optional — you can enable a module without applying any template and build from scratch.
  • Templates are filtered by your workspace's Industry (chosen during setup and editable in Settings → General). If your industry is Med Spa & Wellness, for example, you'll see med-spa-specific templates; an industry with no dedicated templates is offered only the general-purpose ones, and a workspace with no industry set is offered none.

Navigate to Settings → Modules in the sidebar.

Step 1: Find the module to enable

The Modules page lists the modules available to your workspace with their current state. People, Execution, and Strategy are marked Required and are always on; a few others show Managed because a platform admin controls them. Your industry already switched on a starting set when you created the workspace.

Find the module you want to turn on and flip its Enabled / Disabled switch. It takes effect immediately and a toast confirms "[Module] enabled" — there is no confirmation dialog for turning a module on (only for turning one off), and no template picker in the switch itself.

Step 2: Open the module's templates

Click Settings on the module's row, then View templates in the Templates section. (Modules without their own settings page don't show a Settings link; on an empty list page, such as an empty Projects list, owners, admins, and advisors see an Apply a template button that opens the same place.)

The [Module] Templates page lists each template as a card with a name and a short summary of what it creates (for example, "Creates 3 departments and 4 seat definitions…").

If no templates are listed, the page shows No templates available — the module has no starter templates for your industry. If you opened it before enabling the module, the cards show "Module disabled" in place of the Apply button.

Prefer to do several modules at once? The Starter templates for [your industry] card at the top of Settings → Modules applies the templates for every module you tick. See How to apply a template to your workspace.

Step 3: Apply

Click Apply on the template you want. The button shows Applying… while it runs, and a toast reports the result — "Template applied — N items created." The content is created straight away, so navigate to the module's main page to see it.

Step 4: Review seeded content

The seeded content is real — it shows up in the module's full UI and can be edited, deleted, or extended like anything you'd create manually. Common examples:

  • People template: starter departments and organizational seats (for example Clinical, Front Desk, and Admin for a med spa).
  • Rhythm template: a recurring Team Sync series with an industry agenda, or — for a dental practice — a weekday Daily Huddle board with Safety, Quality, Scheduling, and Cost lanes.
  • CRM template: a starter pipeline with stages for your industry (for a med spa, "Membership conversion": Prospect, Interested, Trial Month, Member). Contacts-pipeline templates require B2C or Both; they are skipped in B2B mode without changing your CRM mode.
  • Strategy template: annual goals, quarterly priorities, and scorecard metrics without any history.

Review each piece of seeded content and delete or rename anything that doesn't fit your organization.

Re-applying a template

You can browse and apply additional templates at any time without re-enabling the module: Settings → Modules → [Module name] → View templates.

Template application is idempotent — applying the same template twice does not create duplicates. Items that already exist (matched by seed key) are skipped; only missing items are created, and the toast reads "Template already applied — nothing new to create." if there was nothing to add.
