In SPLX OS, a seat is an accountability position in your org chart — a role your organization runs, independent of who holds it. Managing seat assignments means keeping the right people connected to the right seats as your team grows, shifts, and turns over. This is separate from workspace membership, which controls login access and is managed under Team at /team.
Before you start
You need admin or owner role to add, edit, or remove seat assignments. All workspace members can view the org chart in read-only mode.
The People module must be enabled at Settings → Modules.
Assigning someone to a seat
Go to People → Org Chart at /people/org-chart. Click the seat card to open its side panel.
Under Assignments, select the person's name from the dropdown. The dropdown shows profiles not already assigned to this seat (both linked profiles and stub profiles are eligible). Click Add.
The person's name appears under the seat immediately. A seat can hold multiple assignments — useful for interim arrangements or co-leads.
Removing an assignment
Open the seat's side panel and click the × next to the person's name in the Assignments list. The unassignment is logged to the audit trail as people.seat.unassigned and takes effect immediately.
Moving someone to a different seat
There is no "move" shortcut — move is a two-step operation:
- Open the source seat, remove the person's assignment.
- Open the destination seat, add the person's assignment.
The audit log records people.seat.unassigned and people.seat.assigned for these two steps respectively.
Rearranging the seats themselves (not the people)
If the reporting structure changes, you can rearrange the seat hierarchy — this is distinct from person assignment. Click Edit in the toolbar to enter edit mode, drag seats to reparent or reorder them, then click Done to save.
When a seat's parent changes, the audit log records people.seat.moved (labeled "Seat moved (org chart)" in the audit log under Settings → Audit Log). This action is about the seat node, not the person.
Edit mode is buffered — all drag moves are held in the browser and sent to the server only when you click Done. Click Cancel or press Escape to discard pending changes.
When someone leaves the workspace
Removing a member from the workspace (under Team) does not automatically unassign them from org chart seats. Their profile remains in the directory and their seat assignments persist. To clean up: open each seat they held and remove the assignment manually, or reassign to their replacement.
Seat limits and deletion
A seat can only be deleted if it has no active child seats. The API rejects the delete with a conflict error if children exist — reparent or remove child seats first.
Known limitation: The delete action for seats is not currently reachable in the org chart UI. Seat deletion requires direct API access. If you need to remove a seat, contact your workspace owner.
Workspace membership vs seat assignments
These are two different things:
| Where | Controls | |
|---|---|---|
| Workspace membership | Team at /team |
Login access, workspace role (owner/admin/advisor/contributor/viewer) |
| Seat assignment | Org Chart at /people/org-chart |
Accountability position in the org chart |
A person can hold a seat without being a workspace member (stub profiles), and workspace members don't need a seat to use SPLX OS. Keep both up to date for an accurate picture of your team.
What to do next
With seat assignments current, you can run accountability-grounded role fit reviews. From a person's profile at /people/directory/<userId>, click the Role Fit tab and use + New review to record a structured assessment tied to their seat.
